Bar Americain't

The Ladies Who Brunch

Sunday before last, I was in New York City having lunch with Sarah and Mandy, who graciously let me spend the weekend at their apartment.

The night before, we picked a restaurant near my Chinatown bus stop and informed Kathy, Melanie's sister, of our plans. She was planning on coming in from White Plains. She had the address of the restuarant, and we were going to make reservations in the morning!

You knew this wasn't going to go well.

The place we picked, out of the 2008 TimeOut New York Restuarant Guide, was closed. For about a year. Awesome. So Mandy and Sarah went to the drawing board and came up with Bobby Flay's Bar Americain. I was game, since I'd never eaten at anything that well known in NYC before.

We had a reservation. We were 30 minutes early for our reservation. They had PLENTY of empty tables. Yet, the waiter insisted they were "more busy than usual".

Oh! So that's why I had to scarf down a $20 hamburger in 5 minutes!

HOLY COW BOBBY FLAY!

It took 45 minutes from when they brought out Sarah and Mandy's appetizers to when our food arrived. We warned them THRICE that we were on a tight schedule. At the end, when I probably should have been leaving to go to the bus stop, we said cancel my order. The waiter said "Oh! It's coming out!". All the food arrived THEN my burger because we hadn't had enough fun that afternoon.

I ate 2/3 of it, because really nothing in life makes me more happy than an expensive hamburger. I barely remember this one.

I gave Kathy my fries, and she came outside to help me hail a cab. She stole a cab from a bitchy woman buy saying "SHE HAS TO CATCH A BUS!". I ran into the cab and yelled "Thank you!" out the window, leaving Kathy to deal with the woman's rudeness.

I pulled up to the stop and my bus was already loading. And my cab driver wished me a Happy Fathers' Day.

I am dissappointed and bummed. It shouldn't have taken that long to receive food from an Iron Chef's kitchen. They only have an hour on the show!
