Setting: work
Scenario: We have a "staff reccommends" in the music section at Books&Notions. The person who had Ani DiFranco up for the past few weeks was terminated. I decided since this is my birthday month, I would put up Ancient Melodies Of The Future by Built to Spill. Coincidentally, the name of this blog was inspired by a song on that CD. This was the sign I put up with the CD:
Built to Spill pioneered the sound that Modest Mouse and The Shins made famous. Wonderful pop music from the potato farmlands of Idaho.
These are the conversations that choice has sparked:
My boss: A woman came in the other day and asked if this was Celtic music.
Me: Celtic music?
My boss: Yeah, the title: ancient melodies. I think she thought it was like . . .
Me: . . . Celtic woman music?
My boss: Yeah!
Me: Did she not read the part where I wrote "pop music"?
My boss: I guess not!

Customer: Built to Spill . . . I wouldn't have chosen this one.
Me: I know. It wouldn't have been my pick either, but I had to go with what we had in the store.
Customer: I mean, this is probably their weakest album. I would have gone with Keep It Like A Secret.
Me: Oh! That's a good one too. But if I had my pick I would have chosen There's Nothing Wrong With Love.
Customer: This is still the worst album though.
Me: It's the most pretty cover though!

Girl costumer: *talking to her friend* Built to Spill. Dude introduced me to them. *keeps chatting about Built to Spill and music as she bends down to tie her shoes and I bend down to pick up a bag*
Girl costumer: *comes back up* And they have this song that is "The Best Ever Death Metal Band Out Of Denton".
Me: That's not Built to Spill. That's the Mountain Goats.
Girl: What?
Me: "Best Ever Death Metal Band Out Of Denton". The Mountain Goats sing that.
Girl's friend: Oh! She changed the band we were talking about when she bent down to tie her shoe.
Me: I'm sorry. I just thought you had Built to Spill and The Mountain Goats confused.
Girl: They are both good bands!
Me: I agree.
